Reflections from WordCamp Asia: Open Source, AI, and the Future of WordPress

Want to know the latest from WordCamp Asia? This volunteer-driven event, supported by the WordPress Foundation, brings together the best of the WordPress community. From February 20-22, Manila hosted this year’s event, and I’m sharing the top takeaways you need to know.

WordCamp Asia 2025 had a clear message—the open web matters, and those of us working with WordPress help shape its future. Across the talks and discussions, a few key themes stood out:

  • Gutenberg keeps evolving – The keynote explored the future of WordPress, focusing on making it both more intuitive and more powerful.
  • AI is everywhere – Sessions covered how AI can boost workflow and productivity, but also raised concerns about hyper-personalized web experiences leading to more siloed content.
  • Security is a mindset – WordPress itself isn’t insecure; bad practices are. A great session emphasized how simple steps such as keeping everything updated and having a trusted tech team (like Marit Digital!) to help keep your site secure make all the difference.
  • WordPress is pushing creative boundaries – From cutting-edge block themes to the high-energy Speed Build Challenge, it’s clear that WordPress is now more versatile than ever.
  • The open web needs defending – One of the most thought-provoking talks warned about the risks of closed digital ecosystems and why keeping the web open is crucial for innovation and accessibility.

One stat that really stuck with me: 43% of the web now runs on WordPress. That means what we build, how we write, and the tools we use have a real impact on what people see and experience online.

Oh, and my favourite quote from the conference? “Bullet points are my love language.” Safe to say, I felt seen.
