Power Hours and Energy Wins

Sneaky Slack

Slack is getting, well, slack, for a recent discovery in the company’s Privacy Principles:

To develop non-generative AI/ML models for features such as emoji and channel recommendations, our systems analyze Customer Data (e.g. messages, content, and files) submitted to Slack as well as Other Information (including usage information) as defined in our Privacy Policy and in your customer agreement.

Users can opt out of having their data used, however, it requires having your Workspace owner reach out to Slack Customer Experience ([email protected], if you’re looking for a shortcut).

The news here shouldn’t be that Slack is using your data; in case you’re not clear, everyone is using your data for their AI models. You can request to be excluded but this is also a good reminder of what we all know: be careful what you put on the internet.

Emissions Insights

I’m going to guess that most of you use either Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for your mail and productivity platform. And I’m going to guess that you didn’t know that your platform can show you estimates for your organization’s carbon impact.

Google Workspace

Figure out your impact by going into your Workspace Admin and browsing to Reporting > Carbon Footprint. The report will show total and monthly breakdowns for impacts.

Microsoft Office 365

Microsoft requires a bit more effort (and potential cost). A subscription for the Power BI Platform is required, though users can start with a free trial. From there you can install the Emissions Impact Dashboard for Office 365.

The BI Platform and dashboard have steeper learning curves but both also return more data and insights about your business impacts.
