Summer Reading
I’ll be honest, this headline may be my version of clickbait because there’s nothing that gets me to open an email faster than the promise of a good read.
Here’s a few of my favorites (short and long-form; fiction and non-fiction) from the past few months!
Datafication Nation – Tom Snyder is the Executive Director at RIoT and writes a weekly column for WRAL TechWire looking at issues that arise where technology and business meet. It’s always one to look out for, but I want to highlight his recent post raising the alarm on privacy, Everyday, everywhere your devices are recording data about you.
Atomic Habits – This isn’t a new one, but this was the first time I’d gotten around to reading it and it delivered! Lots of insights into how our habits are formed, how to reinforce the good ones, and dump the bad ones.
Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI – If you’re an AI fan and you haven’t already checked out Ethan Mollick’s newsletter, “One Useful Thing“, you may be living under a rock. The book is a bit of a retread, and Mollick is often too forgiving of the technology and its developers, but he provides great insights for both the short and long term.
Fire Weather – This one came out last summer and tells the story of the 2016 Fort McMurray fire. With it comes details on how recent world temperature increases are fueling fires – and vice versa. It was an eye-opening read and, whether or not you read it this summer, it’ll make you sweat.
No Mercy / No Malice – Scott Galloway is not everyone’s cup of tea, but he regularly shares insightful hot takes on hot topics, and these often relate to tech. Check out his recent post on the need to age-gate social media or this one on the true “value” of AI.
And if you made it all the way down here looking for a beach read, this one’s for you. I deeply enjoyed A Lady’s Guide to Scandal by Sophie Irwin. It’s a fun one with romance and social plotting in the vein of an Austen novel.
Or if you’re an ACOTAR fan (you know who you are), don’t sit on the Everflame series by Penn Cole, which has book 4 coming out next week!
Looking for a speaker for your next event?
I’ve been a speaker, panelist, and instructor for more than 15 years and I’m looking for opportunities to share my insights with your community!
In addition to the Marit Digital class topics, I’d love to speak about sustainable technology, emerging trends, and share my experiences as a mom running a small business.
