It’s officially fall today, September 22nd, and I for one feel it’s quite overdue. I’m done with heat, the NC State Wolfpack football team is well on its way to a disappointing season, and even though the Canes won the Stanley Cup only 99 days ago, I’m officially ready for a new season.

Making an Impact

Last week I attended BLD Southeast, the regional gathering of Southeast B Corp organizations, in Washington DC. The trip included a tour of the Capitol Building, a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, and sessions at George Washington University.

I also managed some sightseeing: the Library of Congress, WWII Memorial, Washington Monument, and many more of the sights that make headlines these days. National Guard troops in neighborhoods. A lonely and overgrown Kennedy Center balcony. The reflecting pool, blocked to the public and teeming with many more workers than any of the subway construction projects we encountered. It was a sobering reminder that the news I read each morning is playing out in real life.

The event also reminded me of the work to be done to restore balance and normalcy in how businesses plan and grow. We have spent the last few years on rocky and uncertain terrain, waiting for the next executive order or trying to make strategies work as tarriffs hit, grants are canceled, and budgets are slashed.

In six weeks, those of us lucky enough to vote have a chance to make an impact. Election Day is November 3rd and I urge you to use your opportunity to push for the change you want to see. October 9th is the deadline to register to vote, and those who miss that may still be able to vote using same-day registration during early voting. I encourage you to check on your local precinct, and consider early voting, October 15-31. Remember, it’s a shortened window and some locations have closed. Double-check this website for the full list of locations.
