I am totally tickled to share that Marit Digital has officially completed certification to become a B Corporation!
What is a B Corporation?
Not all businesses are in it to maximize profit. There is a long history of businesses more focused on meeting social needs, improving the environment, and/or trying to right injustices through governance best practices.
B Lab is an organization that has established a certification to measure and track the positive impacts of these businesses and ensure standards.
Why go B?
Anyone who has worked on this process knows there’s quite a bit of effort in becoming a B Corp, so it’s fair to ask why bother?
Inspiration comes in different forms. For me, it started by seeing some of my colleagues – women-owned businesses in the Triangle area who were contributing to the B Corp community. These include Paradox Consulting, Unity Web Agency, Noel & Co., and Cadence Cash, to name a few. I also attended BLD Southeast last fall at NC State and found that the people and conversations we’re really on point for what I wanted from my business.
Early this year I was fortunate to join NC State’s B Corp Clinic for their spring semester, and got a team of grad students that can only be described at kick-ass. Without these people on my journey, I would certainly not be sending this message today.
So what’s changing?
Ummm… brand colors?
Jokes aside, much of what I have recommended in terms of digital tools and resources has always been environmentally-friendly. I am working on collecting and offering more energy-use data on the digital tools and platforms in use. And I will be offering training and consulting that will be more targeted to an eco-friendly education. I’m also hoping to find time to build a framework for evaluating technology companies on their environmental and social impacts.
But many other things, including training on security and privacy, digital accessibility and usability practices, and best practices on plain language and transparency, are core to what Marit Digital has always been. I hope you find them valuable to your organization.
