Here we are again, folks. The kids are in camp, schedules are going sideways, and I’m sunburned. It must be – in the immortal words of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – summer, summer, summertime.
(You are not going to regret taking a pause for this throwback.👇)
I’m a big believer in using the relative slowdown of summer to work through some of the less exciting – but still very important! – items on the to-do list. Let’s look at a few of them…
Tech Reviews
We have a tendency to “set it and forget it” with some of our tech, but there’s a lot that needs a check-in.
While I am loathe to add to your to-do list, let me reassure you that a lot of this takes much less time than you think. Many of these things don’t require any action, just a quick check. And when they do require action, it’s the kind of thing you’re really glad you noticed.
Best of all, the reward is feeling like you’ve really accomplished something! I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty much all I’m really after when I fall into bed each night.
- Check on your website.
Are your backups working? Do you have outdated code or users? How’s your site usability and accessibility? Do you have Google Analytics set-up and working properly (if you want to)? - Check on your compliance.
If you’re using analytics on your site, do you have a cookie compliance notification? What about a privacy statement? Are you starting to use AI and thinking about an AI policy? - Check on security.
Do you have a password manager? Are your website, email, and other digital tools configured securely? Have you reviewed or restricted access to required team members only? - Check on efficiency.
Is your website running well and using minimal resources? Could you be consolidating the number of accounts or tools you’re using?
I know it looks like a lot, but to help you keep track – and provide those delightful little checkboxes
we all love to check – here’s a Google sheet with the full list.
And if you start working through your technology review and find that you need more support to “check in” on everything, please reach out. Marit Digital does Summer Site Reviews for all of our clients utilizing our WordPress Hosting Services.
Security
When I worked at NC State, summer was often my time for the annual required trainings. They’re not thrilling, but many businesses need the CYA step of making sure their employees understand the latest and most critical security best practices.
While you might not have a mandate for training in your organization, it can be a good idea to review the fundamentals at least every couple of years.
We can also teach a Security class for your team – in person or online. Reach out and let’s find some time.
Good work! Time to sit back and unwind.

What We’re Reading
Mmmm… reading. Stay tuned for next month’s annual Summer Reading issue of the newsletter!
- The most important thing you can do to fight climate change, Katharine Hayhoe [YouTube TED Talk] Great talk covering the simple things you can do to make an impact.
- The Moral Lighthouse: Artificial Intelligence and the World We Want, Michael L. Bąk [techpolicy.press] Beautifully written with thoughtful (non-Western) perspectives on AI development and impact.
- Why AI is bad (MIT Technology review) and why it isn’t (Andy Masley on Substack). As someone said to me today, you can make the data look any way you want. These may be opposing views, but they cover a lot of ground and both are worth reading.
- The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo. Taking place in early 20th century Manchuria, two uniquely-talented characters narrate a tale of mystery and revenge.
“For all stories have an ending as well as a beginning. But a beginning is where you choose to plant your foot, and the ending is only the edge of one’s own knowledge.”
